The Winnipeg Blue Bombers announced Thursday that Jim Bell has been named the club's vice-president and chief operating officer.

Bell was the president of the Bombers for the past two years, but was shuffled aside earlier this month when the Bombers announced they had hired local radio executive Garth Buchko as their new president and chief executive officer.

Buchko's hiring had left Bell's continuing status with the Bombers hazy until Thursday's announcement.

"Jim is a very valuable asset to this organization and someone who has done a great job at promoting our brand throughout the province," Buchko said in a statement released by the Bombers.

"I look forward to working with him in this role, which he will bring a lot of determination and dedication to. His experience and knowledge of our business will be a tremendous resource for not only me but to our entire organization."

The club said Bell -- who was originally hired in 2002 as the Bombers' director of finance -- will "continue to manage the club's day-to-day operations" while also assisting Buchko on the business side of things and the transition to the new stadium at University of Manitoba this summer.

"I am very excited about my new role with the football club," Bell said in a statement. "I look forward to strengthening the relationships I've built in the business community and continuing to work hard to ensure the best for this organization."

Blue sign Colts castoff

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers announced Thursday morning they have signed former Indianapolis Colts import running back/kick returner Chad Simpson.

Simpson (5-foot-9, 216) signed with the Colts in 2008 as an undrafted free agent and played in 25 games in Indianapolis -- as a reserve running back and kickoff returner -- over two seasons.

Simpson also ran back five kicks for 111 yards in Super Bowl XLIV, which the Colts lost 31-17 to the New Orleans Saints.

The Colts released Simpson in April 2010, but he was later picked up in September 2010 by Washington and played three games that season with the Redskins.

He was released by Washington in July 2011 and did not play last season.

Simpson's NFL numbers include 55 kickoff returns for 1,301 yards and a touchdown and 30 carries for 147 rushing yards and three touchdowns.

Simpson holds the school rushing record at Morgan State with 1,402 yards in his senior season.
