Bombers load camp roster with two DBs, LB, receiver

THE Winnipeg Blue Bombers continue to mine for some roster gold.

With the opening of rookie and main training camps just a few weeks away, the club announced Monday the signing of three import defensive players -- defensive backs Bert Brown and David James and linebacker Daniel Sheffield -- while also inviting Winnipeg Rifles receiver Brett Carter to participate.

Brown (6-0, 169; Union College) racked up 123 tackles, 35 pass knockdowns, five forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and five blocked kicks during his college career and also returned punts and kicks.

James (5-11, 190; Weber State) was a Wyoming transfer who was considered one of the top cornerbacks in the Big Sky Conference. He finished his college days with 98 tackles and four interceptions while starting in 26 games over three seasons.

Sheffield (6-3, 206; Troy) attended training camp with the Saskatchewan Roughriders last year but was one of the team's final cuts. He played three years with the Trojans, registering 147 tackles, seven tackles for a loss and one interception.

Carter, meanwhile, will participate in training camp after playing the last two years with the Rifles. The former St. Vital Mustang was a Canadian Junior Football League All-Canadian and the Rifles' MVP after pulling in 48 passes for 782 yards and six touchdowns.
