Buck out, Burke no wiser as to fate

WITH the last game of the season looming on Saturday as the 11-6 Montreal Alouettes will visit the 5-12 Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Bombers head coach Tim Burke said he is no closer to knowing his future with the team.

Burke, who stepped into the head coach's role on an interim basis after the football club fired Paul LaPolice on Aug. 25, has a 3-6 record with the team he inherited.

"I don't know. It's completely up to Garth (CEO Buchko) and Joe (GM Mack) and the board," Burke said.

BURKE brought out a hand-written list of injuries on Monday to meet with the media, noting there's so many he can't remember them all.

In addition to quarterback Buck Pierce, who has a shoulder injury, the following players will miss Saturday's game: RB Chad Simpson (foot), RB Will Ford (shoulder), SB Terrence Edwards (foot), R Isaac Anderson (shoulder). Others who could possibly miss the game and will be evaluated as the week goes on include DB Demond Washington, DB Johnny Sears, QB Joey Elliott, DL Bryant Turner, DL Kenny Mainor and DL Jason Vega.

THERE was a vote of confidence from the coach for backup quarterback Joey Elliott, who came into last Saturday's loss to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats to relieve Pierce after he was injured.

Elliott, who has a 2-5 record as Winnipeg's starting quarterback, completed just 14 of 29 pass attempts for 126 yards and an interception against the Tiger-Cats.

"I think he's got a chance to be a full-time quarterback in this league. He's progressed throughout the year," Burke said. "I don't think he had his greatest game this last week.

"But I do think that Joey has a chance to be a starting quarterback in this league."
