Blue Bomber Report

Under construction

IF there is one thing Buck Pierce would like to see from the Bombers' offence, one area in which they could improve, it would be...

'We've got to stop turning the ball over and just stop hurting ourselves,' says QB Buck Pierce.

"Consistency is the main word," said the Bombers' pivot. "We've put some great drives together and we've played a couple quarters here and there where we look great and then we have quarters where we can't move the ball and we're struggling in certain areas.

"We've got to improve that. We've got to stop turning the ball over and just stop hurting ourselves."

Head coach Tim Burke is seeing progress with his squad, particularly on defence, and getting some questions answered. But in a league known for its explosive attacks, he'd like to see a little more pop from his offensive dozen.

"We really got better as a team last week," said Burke. "Hopefully we can make that same sort of transition this week, and get a little bit better... Offensively, I feel pretty good about the direction we're heading. We're working to achieve perfection, but we haven't achieved it yet."

Ouch update

DEFENSIVE end Alex Hall sat out Wednesday's practice to nurse a battered body, but is expected to be back at practice today and play in Saturday's game. Kenny Mainor will rest today, but should be good to go in Guelph as well.

Elsewhere on the injury front, receiver Kito Poblah is still on the shelf, and Burke said it's hard to tell when he might return. But nickelback Johnny Sears is "very close" to getting back to the field, although when he returns it might be as an extra defensive back to allow for an easier transition back into the defence.

The Bombers will be without slotback Terrence Edwards (shoulder) and defensive tackle Bryant Turner (chest) for Saturday.

Numbers game

THE Ticats rank last in 12 of the 25 defensive statistics the CFL tracks, including points (69), touchdowns (nine); yards rushing per game (149.0); average gain per pass (9.0 yards) and average gain per rush (9.0 yards).

New face

DEFENSIVE lineman Dexter Davis will make his debut for the Bombers on Saturday. The 6-3, 230-pound rookie from Friends University in Wichita will take Freddie Harris' spot on the roster.

"Dexter's healthy now," said Burke. "And we really like what he can do as far as rushing the passer. This is his chance to show us."
