Lobendahn settles in with Riders

Tweet trouble for Jeffers-Harris

IT didn't take long for Joe Lobendahn to crack the Saskatchewan Roughriders' first-team defence.

Lobendahn, whose signing was officially announced shortly before Wednesday's practice at Mosaic Stadium, was the middle linebacker with the starting defence. The Riders also added another import linebacker, Diamond Ferri, who spent five seasons with the Montreal Alouettes before being released during training camp.

Lobendahn, who was with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers for four seasons, was cut prior to their 2012 training camp. The Riders host to the Bombers on Sunday and it's likely Lobendahn will start against his former team.

"If we were playing Montreal, we would probably let it be Diamond,'' Riders head coach Corey Chamblin said Wednesday when asked about Lobendahn's status for Sunday's game. "We'll just let (Lobendahn) get a taste against his old team.''

Lobendahn, 29, signed with the Calgary Stampeders after being released by the Bombers. He played in both pre-season games but was cut in mid-July.

"It's a privilege to start anywhere you go in the CFL,'' said Lobendahn, who is 5-11 and 241 pounds.

Lobendahn dressed for 45 games with Winnipeg, recording 180 defensive tackles, seven sacks and an interception. Lobendahn's 2011 season ended on Sept. 11 when he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during the Riders' 45-23 victory over the host Blue Bombers. It was the third time Lobendahn tore his right ACL.

SASKATCHEWAN Roughriders receiver Terence Jeffers-Harris was unrepentant but suitably chastised after a series of tweets over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers' firing of head coach Paul LaPolice.

Jeffers-Harris was released by the Bombers on Nov. 17, three days before the East Division final against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. He signed with Hamilton the next day, but didn't dress for the game. The Blue Bombers thumped the Tiger-Cats 19-3.

Jeffers-Harris was critical of LaPolice and tweeted this after learning of the coach's firing: "Best News the #CFL has EVER had!!!! #Karma is a *#!@*#%$!^''.

The tweets were brought to the attention of the Roughriders' brass, which led to head coach Corey Chamblin having a talk with the import receiver. The Riders play host to the Blue Bombers on Sunday.

"I told him, 'At the end of the day, you're going to have your thoughts,''' Chamblin said. "I can't change a man's thoughts. He needs to recognize that if he's a member of the Riders organization, what he does directly affects us as well. Putting it out to the public isn't the way to do it.''
