Blue Bombers GM Joe Mack appears prepared to go younger and cheaper at the safety position with the signing of free agent Cauchy Muamba.
Muamba was offered three different packages by his former club the B.C. Lions before taking more money from the Blue Bombers.
The deal is reportedly in six figures, just cresting the $100,000 mark. The 24-year-old was a starter with the Lions last season after two years of mostly special teams work.
Muamba had 41 tackles last season and two interceptions as well as nine special teams tackles.
"I'm excited to be part of what they're building in Winnipeg," said Muamba, who played his college football at St. Francis Xavier and was selected 34th overall by the Lions in the 2010 CFL Draft.
Muamba became the Lions' starting safety in 2012, seeing action in 17 of 18 regular season games and the Western Final.
What all this means for Blue Bombers veteran safety Ian Logan remains to be seen but the 30-year-old former CFL all-star had a down year in 2012 and with a reported salary of $120,000 is slightly more expensive than the 24-year-old Muamba.
Logan may be the more polished player at this point but some CFL insiders believe Muamba could have a little more upside.
Logan's best season came in 2011 when he collected four interceptions and was named a league all-star. In 2012 he managed just one pick.
Logan has played 109 of 126 Blue Bomber games since 2006 missing the following per season: 2006, 4; 2007, 3; 2008, 0; 2009, 2; 2010, 5; 2011, 1; 2012, 2.
Muamba said the Bombers have given him no indication he'll be the starter.
"They haven't said anything about who would start. They came after me hard and I know they have a good player in Ian Logan," said Muamba. "I expect to compete for the job."
Muamba said playing with his brother and Bombers linebacker Henoc Muamba wasn't the key factor in his decision to leave the Lions.
"Henoc made sure he didn't pressure me on that part. I know he supports me and playing with him will be great but it was probably the last thing I looked at when making the decision," said Muamba.
