O'Shea preaches restraint, won't tolerate camp scraps

The fists didn't quite fly on Wednesday at Investors Group Field.

And they won't, if Winnipeg Blue Bombers head coach Mike O'Shea has his way.

O'Shea was asked if he cares one way or another if there's a training camp scrap or two.

"Yeah, I do care," he said, reacting quickly to the question. "These guys are competing at a very high level and sometimes the emotions get the better of you. I basically talk about two things, that's take care of your teammates, No. 1, and don't take penalties. Because if you take penalties, you're not taking care of your teammates."

A MERE FLESH WOUND: Defensive end Greg Peach had a minor interruption at Wednesday's training camp workout, apparently dislocating his finger.

He barely missed a beat and O'Shea batted away a question about the veteran lineman.

"Truthfully, it kind of makes me giggle," O'Shea said. "(It happened to me) several times. It doesn't matter. It's a finger. It's dislocated, you pull it back in place, pop it back in place yourself if you can, and you tape it to the other one and you move on. And that's what you do. And that's what Greg Peach does and there was never another thought in Greg Peach's mind of doing anything other than that and that's why Greg Peach is who he is."

ON SCHEDULE: After naming Drew Willy their starting quarterback long before he ever threw a ball for the Bombers, the new No. 1 is progressing nicely, O'Shea said Wednesday.

"Extremely comfortable (with him)," the coach said. "He's making his throws. His numbers are all good. His percentages, they break it down and they chart everything. When I look at the numbers at the end of the day, they're good.

"You find out little things all the time but to say that I truly know Drew Willy right now, I haven't had enough time to just be around him. But he's been pretty good so far."

DEPARTURE: Defensive back Terry Hawthorne has left camp on his own, to return to school, the team said. Hawthorne, who had played at Illinois and had been drafted last year by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the fifth round, had been added to the training camp roster just Saturday.
