VANCOUVER -- Rich Stubler is out as defensive co-ordinator of the B.C. Lions.

The Lions announced on Saturday they will not renew Stubler's contract for the 2014 season, ending his latest stint in B.C.

The veteran CFL coach is likely to be a strong candidate to fill the same role with the rebuilding Winnipeg Blue Bombers

Stubler had finished his second year as the team's defensive co-ordinator after returning to B.C. in 2012 following stays with the club in 2000 and 2010.

"I am grateful for Rich's contributions to our organization and on behalf of our club, I wish him the very best in the future," said head coach Mike Benevides.

The Lions had a 11-7 record in the regular season, finishing third in the West Division.

Stubler has a long association with new Blue Bombers head coach Mike O'Shea in Toronto. O'Shea was formally unveiled in Winnipeg on Wednesday and said he would immediately begin assembling a staff of assistants.

Saskatchewan Roughriders defensive backs coach Barron Miles and Lions defensive backs coach Mark Washington and believed by many to be ready to make the step to co-ordinator and could be considered for the Winnipeg post.

B.C. lost to the Saskatchewan Roughriders 29-25 in the West semifinal.

Stubler has been in and out of the CFL since 1983, serving as a defensive co-ordinator for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Edmonton Eskimos, Toronto Argonauts and B.C. in that time.

He was also head coach of the Argos in 2008, but was fired after a 4-6 start to the season.
