REGINA -- Kyle Walters' first job as GM of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers will be to wait for a call from one of his veteran colleagues.
Toronto Argonauts GM Jim Barker is trying to sign quarterback Zach Collaros to a contract so he can trade him. Barker has been talking to Collaros's agent but has made little progress so far. Collaros is set to be a free agent in February and can control his destiny at that stage, so is reluctant to sign a contract with the Argos just so they can flip him.
Walters may have to make a conditional trade with the Argos and then try to sign Collaros himself. A late draft pick for the right to talk to Collaros, and if the Bombers can sign him the draft selection would elevate to a higher round or perhaps become a roster player.
Walters will be officially named GM of the Blue Bombers early next week. Expect a press conference to be called for Tuesday or Wednesday.
He has been acting GM of the Bombers since Joe Mack was fired in August and CEO Wade Miller will officially give him the position when he returns to Winnipeg after the Grey Cup.
A potential candidate for the Blue Bombers GM job told the Free Press on Thursday he was unsure if he would take an interview with Miller if asked because most people in the CFL believed the job had already been given to Walters.
On Friday, the same candidate said he wouldn't be accepting a request for an interview if it was offered.
"The job is Kyle's. (The Bombers) are telling coaching candidates that Kyle will hold interviews beginning next week. I don't even know if they were going to ask to speak to me," he said.
Earlier this week reports broke Walters was planning to talk to Hamilton Tiger-Cats scout and former CFL quarterback Danny McManus about an assistant GM job with the Bombers.
Walters has been working and acting like he's the GM of the Bombers for some time now.
The Bombers would not comment on the subject when reached Friday but they would not deny the report.
Walters is expected to interview Argos defensive co-ordinator Chris Jones, Argos special teams coach Mike O'Shea, Calgary Stampeders defensive co-ordinator Rick Campbell and Saskatchewan Roughriders quarterbacks coach Khari Jones for the Bombers head coaching job.
