The Manitoba Golf Scholarship Fund has unveiled its six recipients for 2014, including its major award to Steven Young of St. Charles Country Club.
Young will receive the $3,500 Dr. Dwight Parkinson Award, newly created in 2013 to honour Dr. Parkinson’s long-time commitment to the game in the province.
It goes to a student of highest academic standing entering the first year of studies at a post-secondary institution. Young is enrolled at University of Manitoba to pursue a science degree. He was second at this summer’s Manitoba Junior.
Five other students will receive $1,000 awards, including Matthew Gray of St. Charles, Stephanie Lasiuk of St. Boniface, David Nelson of Southwood, Lucas Wazney of Elmhurst and Micah Zacharias of Portage.
Gray is working towards a masters of landscape architecture degree at University of British Columbia; Lasiuk, who was named the Dr. Parkinson award winner last year, is heading for her second year at University of Winnipeg in the Bachelor of Arts program with a major in journalism and French; Nelson attends U of M in the Bachelor of Science (microbiology) program; Wazney expects to graduate in one year’s time with masters of science degree in civil engineering from U of M; Zacharias will be a freshman at U of M this fall and aims to pursue a degree in business or law.
Since its inception, the Manitoba Golf Scholarship Fund has made 165 awards worth $167,000.
