A capsule look at 10 top contenders for the 96th PGA Championship, to be played Aug. 7-10 at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky.

ADAM SCOTT

Age: 34.

Country: Australia.

World ranking: 1.

Worldwide wins: 24.

2014 wins: Colonial.

Majors: Masters (2013).

2014 Majors: Masters-T14, US Open-T9, British Open-T5.

Birdies: He hasn't finished out of the top 10 since he went to No. 1 in the world in May.

Bogeys: He has won only two times in America in the last year.

RORY MCILROY

Age: 25.

Country: Northern Ireland.

World ranking: 2.

Worldwide wins: 13.

2014 wins: BMW PGA Championship, British Open.

Majors: US Open (2011), British Open (2014), PGA Championship (2012).

2014 Majors: Masters-T8, US Open-T23, British Open-1.

Birdies: The last time he won a major, he established himself as the best player in golf.

Bogeys: Only six players in history have won the final two majors of the year.

SERGIO GARCIA

Age: 35.

Country: Spain.

World ranking: 5.

Worldwide wins: 24.

2014 wins: Qatar Masters.

Majors: None.

2014 Majors: Masters-Cut, US Open-T35, British Open-T2.

Birdies: Has more top 3s in the PGA Championship than in any other major, including two runner-up finishes.

Bogeys: Played great at Hoylake when the pressure was off. Now the pressure is back on.

JIM FURYK

Age: 44.

Country: United States.

World ranking: 8.

Worldwide wins: 19.

2014 wins: None.

Majors: US Open (2003).

2014 Majors: Masters-T14, US Open-T12, British Open-4.

Birdies: Already has three runner-up finishes this year, was runner-up at the PGA last year and has locked up a spot on the Ryder Cup team.

Bogeys: Hasn't won in four years and has failed to convert a 54-hole lead the last seven times.

TIGER WOODS

Age: 38.

Country: United States.

World ranking: 10.

Worldwide wins: 90.

2014 wins: None.

Majors: Masters (1997, 2001, 2002, 2005), US Open (2000, 2002, 2008), British Open (2000, 2005, 2006), PGA Championship (1999, 2000, 2006, 2007).

2014 Majors: Masters-DNP, US Open-DNP, British Open-69.

Birdies: Won at Valhalla in 2000. With a victory, he can join Jack Nicklaus and Walter Hagen with fifth PGA Championship title.

Bogeys: Also won at Hoylake in 2006 and that didn't do him any good at the British Open— he finished 69th, his worst 72-hole finish in a major. Hasn't seen Valhalla in 14 years.

RICKIE FOWLER

Age: 25.

Country: United States.

World ranking: 18.

Worldwide wins: 2.

2014 wins: None.

Majors: None.

2014 Majors: Masters-T5, US Open-T2, British Open-T2.

Birdies: First player since Tiger Woods in 2005 to finish in the top 5 at the first three majors of the year.

Bogeys: Has gone 57 tournaments over two years since he last won a tournament.

2014 wins: Northern Trust Open, Masters.

Majors: Masters (2012, 2014).

Birdies: Could join Jack Nicklaus as the only players to win the first and last majors of the year since the Masters began in 1934.

Bogeys: Has missed the cut in his last two majors.

Bogeys: Has only one top 10 in the PGA Championship.

2014 wins: Quicken Loans National, Scottish Open.

Majors: US Open (2013).

2014 Majors: Masters-T14, US Open-T12, British Open-T23.

Birdies: A victory would give Europe three of the four majors for the first time.

Bogeys: His average score in the first round of majors this year is 74.
