Wytinck, East fire 71s at Canadian Amateur
Lead Manitoba contingent after opening round
HE said it was no great accomplishment but Manitoba Amateur champion Josh Wytinck of Pine Ridge understands the value of a good start to this week's Canadian Men's Amateur Golf Championships near Ottawa.
Wytinck, 20, carded an opening-day 71, one-under-par, at club de golf Outaouais on Tuesday.
Also in at 71 on Day 1 was Derek East of St. Charles, also at Outaouais.
Wytinck, the Glenboro native said after winning the Manitoba Amateur in a four-man playoff that he wanted to be focused on a better performance at the Canadian Am. At last year's championship at Niakwa, his first appearance at the national event, he missed the cut.
"Since the Players Cup (where he was the first amateur in five years to make the cut), I've been hitting the ball horribly, probably my B or C game," Wytinck said via phone after his round on Tuesday. "And for a long time, my short game was my downfall but it was the best part of my game today, my strength, because I got up and down from everywhere.
"I only hit six or seven greens today. So if I can figure out my swing a little bit, I believe I can play even better."
Wytinck, five shots off the first-day lead held by Ontario's Alex Carrigan, had three birdies and two bogeys on Tuesday.
"I birdied my first two holes and hung on from there," he said.
Combined with teammate Garth Collings of Breezy Bend (77 at Outaouais), Manitoba stood fifth in the two-day team competition, seven strokes behind Ontario and Alberta.
Aaron Cockerill of Teulon, the other member of Manitoba's interprovincial team, shot 79 at Outaouais on Tuesday.
Scores from other Manitoba's at the championship included a 76 from Bryce Barr of Southwood (Camelot Golf and Country Club), 77 from Pine Ridge's Bobby Wiebe (Camelot), 78 from Breezy Bend's Jesse Skelton (Outaouais), 79 from Spencer Harris of Niakwa (Camelot) and 81 from Southwood's Charlie Boyechko (Outaouais).
All players in the 240-player field will switch courses for today's play, then the cut comes to the low 70 players and ties for Thursday's and Friday's action.
