Two coaches suspended in wake of hazing investigation

An internal investigation done into hazing with the Neepawa Natives hockey team has resulted in the suspension of two coaches until later this year.

A release by the Manitoba Juniour Hockey League said Bryant Perrier, who has already resigned, will be off the team until April 1.

The release also said Brad Biggers will be suspended until July 1.

"As the head coach and leader of the club’s hockey operations, (Perrier) should have known that hazing activity was being undertaken by members of the team," said Davis, in a prepared statement released to media outlets Wednesday afternoon. "As someone in a position of authority and leadership he was responsible to know what was going on in the dressing room. He failed to do that, and is therefore accountable."

The report said that there were "at least four separate incidents of hazing this year," which resulted in one complaint.

It also said the hazing was started by veteran members of team on rookie players.

"The MJHL finds hazing totally unacceptable and it is clear that the suspensions are an indication of the strong view the League has on this type of behavior," said Davis, in the statement. "Team leaders are responsible for their players and have an obligation to provide a safe environment at all times."

The report said the MJHL’s Board of Governors will receive recommendations, such as educating hockey players about hazing.

It also said there will "mandatory permanent signage within dressing rooms" on the issue. In addition, league coaches "will be required to access professional resource materials concerning hazing from Coaching Manitoba" and "all players and coaches will receive on an annual basis a presentation concerning the implications of hazing."
