Winners of Mike Ridley awards announced
A group of 21 players with the University of Manitoba Bisons men’s and women’s hockey teams have been selected as recipients of the 2011-2012 Mike Ridley Awards.
Awards of $750 went to 17 Bisons men while awards of $650 went to Bisons women. The Mike Ridley Awards were established in 2003-04 season as an endowment fund for the University of Manitoba. The recipients were selected based on athletic ability, academic standing, and leadership.
Mike Ridley, a Winnipeg native, played with the Manitoba Bisons in 1983-1985 and went on to a 12-year NHL career with the New York Rangers, Washington Capitals, Toronto Maple Leafs and Vancouver Canucks. He played his last professional hockey season with the Manitoba Moose. Ridley was the first Bison hockey player to have his jersey retired as his No. 7 was officially retired on Jan. 26, 2004.
