Chris Terry scores late on power play to help Charlotte shut out Abbotsford 1-0
ABBOTSFORD, B.C. - Chris Terry's power-play goal late in the third period lifted the Charlotte Checkers to a 1-0 win over the Abbotsford Heat on Saturday.
Justin Peters made 41 saves to earn the shutout for the Checkers (32-17-5), while the Heat (26-22-8) suffered their seventh straight loss.
With Heat defenceman Chris Breen in the box for hooking, Terry eluded Greg Nemisz at the blue-line and beat Abbotsford goalie Leland Irving with a blocker-side wrist shot to snap a scoreless tie at 15:34. It was his 20th goal of the season.
The Heat boasted a 41-22 edge in shots on goal, but had nothing to show for it due to the flawless play of Peters. One of his best saves of the night came midway through the third period, when he stymied Ben Walter from point-blank range off a rebound.
Irving was also solid, most notably coming up with a stop on Zac Dalpe on a short-handed 2-on-1 break in the second period.
The Heat struggled on the power play for the second straight night. After going 0 for 7 and allowing two short-handed goals in Friday's 5-1 loss to the Checkers, they went 0 for 6 with the man advantage on Saturday.
The Checkers went 1 for 3 on the power play.
