Hamilton and Colborne each score shootout goals as Marlies beat Senators 2-1
TORONTO - Marlies head coach Dallas Eakins doesn't mind making tough choices when it comes to who he'll start in goal for each game.
Drew MacIntyre made 28 saves while Ryan Hamilton and Joe Colborne each scored shootout goals as Toronto beat the Binghamton Senators 2-1 in AHL action Sunday afternoon.
It was MacIntyre's third win in five games since being signed by the Marlies on Feb. 13. Toronto also has Mark Owuya and Jussi Rynnas as options in goal.
“Absolutely ... we love difficult decisions,” said Eakins. “No one wants to make the easy ones. We want these players pushing each other and (MacIntyre’s) come in and done that and definitely start the conversation.”
Out of five Senators players MacIntyre faced in the shootout, Dustin Gazley was the only one who managed to beat him. He made a glove save off the Senators’ final shooter Cole Schneider.
“As a goalie you take that personally when you lose in a shootout,” said MacIntyre, who gave an emphatic fist-pump after stopping Schneider’s shot for the win. “When it got to the shootout I really wanted it. It was how you get the win.”
Greg Scott’s goal late in the second period for Toronto (29-19-6), which defeated Binghamton for the first time in four meetings this season, including a 4-2 loss on Saturday.
Gazley had the regulation goal for Binghamton (33-17-6).
With the win, the Marlies opened up a two-point gap ahead of the Abbotsford Heat for first place in the AHL Western Conferences North Division.
Toronto changed little after Saturday’s loss to the Senators. The difference, according to Eakins, came from an improved defensive performance.
“We wanted better execution today. We didn’t change anything system-wise,” said Eakins. “We thought we had the better chances last game so we just kind of stuck with our same game-plan. We were just able to defend a little bit better.”
Binghamton jumped in front at 4:24 of the first when Jean-Gabriel Pageau found Gazley alone. The winger had time to wait and pick his spot before going high above MacIntyre’s left shoulder.
Toronto tied it at 16:58 of the second when Scott came into the slot, snapped a shot through traffic and past Senators goalie Nathan Lawson.
It looked as though Carter Ashton deflected the puck in, but a review showed Scott’s shot went untouched for his fourth goal of the season.
After being outshout 20-10 through two periods, the Senators came on strong in the third period but MacIntyre made 13 saves in the period to preserve the tie.
In keeping his team in the game, MacIntyre also had some help from his teammates who blocked shots and gave him the chance to see a number of shots clearly, allowing him to make relatively easy saves. It’s something MacIntyre was quick to acknowledge.
“It felt good tonight and I only have numbers because we were good defensively,” he said. “They block shots and do all those little things so that’s why I have good numbers.”
Lawson made 27 in regulation for the Senators.
The Marlies are now off until Wednesday when they host the Syracuse Crunch on Wednesday morning.
Notes: Attendance was 6,635. … Sunday was Canadian Armed Forces Appreciation Day. The Marlies wore special jerseys honouring Canada’s military.
