Varone, Rochester Americans win 3-2 after 10-round shootout with Abbotsford Heat

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Phil Varone, Mark Mancari, Patrick Rissmiller and Alex Biega scored in a 10-round shootout as the Rochester Americans edged the Abbotsford Heat 3-2 on Sunday in American Hockey League action.

Varone also scored in regulation time as Rochester (31-22-4) continued a five-game point streak. Matt Ellis had a goal in the first period for the Americans. David Leggio made 35 saves and turned aside seven shootout attempts for the win.

Drew MacKenzie's third-period goal forced the extra time for Abbotsford (28-25-9), while Akim Aliu scored in the second. Aliu also had a shootout goal, as did Blair Jones and Tyler Ruegsegger.

Danny Taylor stopped 30 shots and six skaters in the shootout for the Heat.

Rochester was 0 for 2 on the power play, while Abbotsford went 0 for 3.
