Avs' backup goalie Budaj gets H1N1 diagnosis
COLORADO Avalanche backup goalie Peter Budaj has been diagnosed with the H1N1 virus.
The team's head coach, Joe Sacco, confirmed the illness after practice Tuesday morning in Edmonton.
Budaj missed his scheduled first start of the season last Friday because of the flu.
"We've taken the necessary steps, the necessary precautions, to keep him away from the guys at the right time," Sacco said to the Denver Post. "Hopefully, he'll be joining us on this trip."
Budaj was scheduled to start last Friday in Denver against Carolina, but his illness kept him out of the game.
The Avalanche played the Oilers Tuesday to open a four-game road trip.
Thrashers call up Krog
THE Atlanta Thrashers recalled former Manitoba Moose centre Jason Krog from the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League on Tuesday.
The team is looking to add depth after announcing Monday that captain Ilya Kovalchuk would be sidelined for about a month with a broken bone in his right foot.
The 34-year-old Krog had four points in 14 games with the Thrashers in the 2006-07 season. Krog had one goal and six assists in eight games with the Wolves.
Flames' Dawes fired up
CALGARY -- It's head up and full steam ahead for Nigel Dawes.
That, says the 24-year-old first-year member of the Calgary Flames, is the only way he's going to fit in with his new National Hockey League team. It's also the only way he truly belongs with shifty linemates Daymond Langkow and René Bourque.
"If you're not ready, it's something you can't hide playing with guys like that," smiled the swift little winger, following Tuesday's final preparation for today's joust with the conference-leading Colorado Avalanche at the Pengrowth Saddledome. "It stands out and it's something we can't have as a team."
Dawes has been a good fit for the most part with arguably the club's No. 1 line but there have been games filled with noticeable struggles by the five-foot-nine, 190-pound draft choice of the New York Rangers in 2003.
But if you're only as good as your last outing, then the Manitoba native is gaining confidence in his new surroundings. A two-goal outing in the Flames' last game shaved two points off what was a team-leading minus-9.
Gagné may need surgery
PHILADELPHIA -- Flyers forward Simon Gagné has two small hernias in his right groin and could face surgery.
The Philadelphia left-winger had an ultrasound on Monday that discovered the hernias. Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren says the team's medical staff will meet with Gagné on Wednesday to discuss his options.
Ott sits for two games
DALLAS Stars centre Steve Ott has been suspended for two games, without pay, by the National Hockey League after a hit on St. Louis Blues defenceman Carlo Colaiacovo on Saturday.
Ott's low hit sent Colaiacovo crashing to the ice. The defenceman then left the game with what the Blues are calling an upper-body injury.
