Former NHL defenceman Charlie Huddy will join his third coaching staff in three years when he joins the Winnipeg Jets' staff under head coach Claude Noel.

The official announcement is expected in the coming days.

Huddy, turfed out of Edmonton two years ago when the Oilers cleaned house, was dismissed by the Dallas Stars two weeks ago. He had one year left on his contract.

Huddy was the only staff casualty when Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk hired Glen Gulutzan as the team's new head coach.

Huddy, an NHL defenceman between 1980 and 1997, was a member of the team most despised in Winnipeg, the Edmonton Oilers, for five Stanley Cups.

The Jets also continue to make other staffing moves, bringing former Grand Rapids Griffins therapist Brad Shaw on board as assistant to head athletic therapist Rob Milette, who was the head athletic therapist with the Moose for six seasons. Shaw worked for the Moose part-time for two seasons, 2005-07.

Preds re-sign Kostitsyn

NASHVILLE -- The Nashville Predators signed forward Sergei Kostitsyn on Friday to a one-year contract.

The deal, which is worth US$2.5 million, came on the same day an arbitrator was expected to rule whether the 24-year-old Kostitsyn would become an unrestricted free agent. The National Hockey League Players' Association had argued that due to a late qualifying offer from the Predators, Kostitsyn should become an unrestricted free agent. A native of Belarus, Kostitsyn scored 23 goals in 77 games to lead the Predators and his 50 points ranked him third in team scoring.

In 232 career NHL games with the Montreal Canadiens and Predators, he has scored 47 goals and 71 assists.

New helpers for Babcock

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. -- Mike Babcock has some new help behind the Detroit Red Wings' bench.

The National Hockey League club announced Friday that Jeff Blashill and Bill Peters have been named assistant coaches to Babcock, the Wings' head coach who is heading into his seventh season with Detroit. Both signed three-year contracts.

They replace Paul MacLean, who left the Wings to become the head coach of the Ottawa Senators, and Brad McCrimmon, who took a coaching job in Russia's Kontinental Hockey League.
