PHILADELPHIA — Day 2 of the NHL Draft got off to a great start for another Manitoba product this morning.

The Florida Panthers called the name of Brandon Wheat Kings right-winger Jayce Hawryluk this morning as the second pick of the second round. He’s the 32nd player overall to be selected.

Hawryluk, 18, had 24 goals and 64 points for the Wheaties this season, in 59 games.

"I’m proud to come from it," said the Roblin native.

Hawryluk said he didn’t have great stress at this draft, waiting for his name to be called.

When he met with the Panthers just before Friday’s first round, he said GM Dale Tallon told him the team would take him with its second-round pick if he was still available.

"They told me they were going to take me and they honoured that," Hawryluk said. "I was super thrilled. That’s a team I really want to go to. I know some guys there and I’m really excited for the opportunity. I’ve heard nothing but great things. Dale’s a great guy, I really like him a lot.

"I had a meeting with them, during the day before the draft. It was 100 per cent."

Hawryluk was the second Manitoban to be chosen this weekend. Hawryluk’s good friend, Travis Sanheim from Elkhorn, went No. 17 Friday night to the host Philadelphia Flyers.

In the third round, with the 73rd pick, the Montreal Canadiens chose Winnipeg’s Brett Lernout, a defenceman with the Swift Current Broncos.

The Habs made a trade with the Phoenix Coyotes to get that pick.
