Jets call up IceCaps players
The Winnipeg Jets are reaching out to a few good men from their affiliate in Newfoundland.
Robin Short of The St. John’s Telegram is reporting the Jets will call up four players for training camp, expected to open Sunday after the ratification process of the new collective-bargaining agreement is completed.
Heading west to Winnipeg will be defencemen Zach Redmond and Paul Postma and forwards Spencer Machacek and Maxime Macenauer. Alex Burmistrov, who hadn’t played for St. John’s since before Christmas after suffering an ‘upper-body’ injury, will also be back with the Jets.
Derek Meech, also a defenceman, is nursing a groin injury and will likely also be coming to the big club when he gets clearance from the IceCaps’ medical staff.
Those departures would mean St. John’s would lose five of its six leading scorers -- Machacek (eight goals, 10 assists) and Postma (7G, 11A) are tied with Jason Jaffray for the team’s scoring lead, followed closely by Redmond (8G 9A), Meech (3G 14A) and Macenauer (7G 8A). To make matters worse, goaltender Mark Dekanich was injured in practice this week.
As a result, the IceCaps have called up goalie Chris Carozzi from the Ontario Reign of the ECHL while signing forward Josh Lunden and defenceman Richard Petiot to professional tryout contracts.
