Predators take 4-3 win over Jets

  • Print

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Three power-play goals in the second period lifted the Nashville Predators to a 4-3 victory over the Winnipeg Jets tonight at Bridgestone Arena.

Jordin Tootoo scored for the home team at 4:50 of the second and then Sergei Kostitsyn, Martin Erat and Patric Hornqvist added man-advantage goals to give Nashville the lead for good.

Erat and Hornqvist scored while Winnipeg's Troy Bodie was in the penalty box after a double-minor for roughing.

Bodie accosted Nashville's Zack Stortini, who didn't fight back after trying to take Winnipeg defenceman Toby Enstrom's head off near the end boards. Bodie stepped in after Stortini missed the heavy hit but it may have been the difference in the game.

"Possibly," Jets coach Claude Noel said. "But you have to tip your hat to him. At least he stood up and tried to do what he does. That’s part of his game.

"On the other hand, you’ve got to recognize that you might get burned. Zack Stortini did a good job for them, drawing him into that and then not dropping his gloves. Is it a good move? It’s something you’ve got to figure out. These are all the things we’re trying to make assessments on."

Predators' coach Barry Trotz liked Stortini's restraint for not engaging Bodie.

"You don't always have to fight," Trotz said. "In that moment, he knew he was drawing a penalty for us. That really changed the game. He showed his experience as a good role player."

Derek Meech, Spencer Machacek and Paul Postma scored for Winnipeg, all in the game's first first 27 minutes.

Winnipegger Chet Pickard, who played the first and then came back into the game late in the second, withstood Winnipeg's strong third-period charge as the Jets outshot Nashville 10-2 in the final frame.

The Preds are 4-1 in the pre-season, the Jets 1-2.
