Jets sign California team as ECHL affiliate

  • Print

WINNIPEG — The Winnipeg Jets didn’t take long to find another working agreement in the ECHL.

After parting ways with the Colorado Eagles a few weeks ago, the Jets have turned to the Ontario (Calif.) Reign as their affiliate.

The Reign will be a place for some players under contract who can’t crack the AHL’s St. John’s IceCaps, or if the IceCaps become overstocked.

Ontario, located just east of Los Angeles, is coached by former Manitoba Moose forward Jason Christie. Christie also worked two seasons as an assistant coach of the AHL’s Chicago Wolves, one of those seasons (2008-09) when Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff was running the Wolves.

The Reign joined the ECHL in 2008 and in 2012-13, finished first in the league’s Pacific Division with a mark of 46-19-7.

The arrangement between the Jets and Reign was announced with a one-year term.

"We are pleased to embark on our new partnership with the Ontario Reign," Jets assistant GM and IceCaps GM Craig Heisinger said in the team’s statement today. "Ontario is an organization that shares our level of commitment to success and we look forward to working together to provide our players’ opportunities to further develop themselves on and off the ice."
