Jets sign Chiarot to new two-way contract

Young depth defenceman Ben Chiarot is coming back into the Winnipeg Jets fold, the team announced on Wednesday.

The Jets re-upped the St. John’s IceCaps regular with a one-year, two-way contract worth $600,000 if he plays in the NHL, just a shade over the league minimum of $550,000. Chiarot, 23, played his first game in the NHL as a call-up last season when he donned a Jets jersey for a Nov. 2 tilt against the Chicago Blackhawks.

Chiarot, who came to the organization as a fourth-round draft pick of the Atlanta Thrashers in 2009, played 65 games with the IceCaps last season, notching six goals and 14 assists and racking up 96 penalty minutes. He also helped push the IceCaps to the Calder Cup Finals, playing in 21 post-season games.
