Jets sign Kichton to three-year deal

The Winnipeg Jets announced Wednesday morning that they have locked down 21-year-old defenceman Brenden Kichton -- their 7th round pick in this year’s NHL entry draft -- to a three-year, two-way entry level deal.

Kichton had a huge year for the Western Hockey League’s Spokane Chiefs in 2012-13, recording 22 goals and 62 assists in 71 games and winning the Bill Hunter Memorial Trophy as the WHL’s top defenceman. Kichton played a total of 333 career games over five seasons for the Chiefs, scoring 67 goals and adding 201 assists.

Kichton was originally drafted by the New York Islanders in 2011 (5th round, 127th overall) but never did sign with New York. The Islanders offered Kichton a contract in 2011, but he turned it down and later characterized it as a "low-ball" offer.

The Islanders never offered Kichton another contract and the left-handed, 6-ft., 195-pound defenceman went back into the draft this year, where the Jets selected him 190th overall.

The Jets said in a release that Kichton’s contract has an average annual value of $620,000.
