Machacek signs new contract with Jets

Spencer Machacek made good on a late-season call-up with the Winnipeg Jets, giving the club an offensive spark and energy as it made an attempted push to a playoff spot.

And now the 23-year-old forward has parlayed that into a new contract with the Jets.

The Jets announced Tuesday they have locked up the Lethbridge, Alta, product – a third-round draft pick by Atlanta in 2007 who was a restricted free agent – to a new deal.

Machacek played 13 games with the Jets last season on two separate call-ups, picking up nine points (two goals, seven assists). But all of those points came in his 11-game promotion to the team in March through to the end of the regular season when he brought life to an attack looking for help due to injuries to Tanner Glass and Kyle Wellwood.

Machacek spent a good chunk of the season with the St. John’s IceCaps, leading the club in scoring with 50 points (18 goals, 32 assists) in just 61 games.

The Jets have one remaining restricted free agent they’d like to lock up to a contract – leading goal scorer Evander Kane has yet to agree to terms on a new deal.
