NHL schedule to be released within weeks

WINNIPEG - Hockey fans in Manitoba can't map out their entertainment schedules just yet, but the NHL will soon provide some rather juicy details for the upcoming 2011-12 season.

A spokesperson with the NHL said this morning this fall’s schedule should be released within the next few weeks, perhaps after the league’s awards show in Las Vegas on June 22.

As a point of reference, here are some key dates from last season:

  • Last year’s rookie camps opened on Sept. 10;
  • Main training camp opened a week later on Sept. 17;
  • Preseason games began in the third week of September;
  • Opening night will come the first week in October and will likely launch with games in Europe, as has been the case for the past four seasons.
    Early indications suggest six teams would head to Europe to play, with the leading contenders being the Anaheim Ducks, Edmonton Oilers, New York Rangers and Washington Capitals.

Meanwhile, executives from True North Sports and Entertainment, led by Mark Chipman, are in New York today to meet with the NHL’s executive committee.

That meeting is to allow True North executives to outline the details of their ‘Drive to 13,000’ ticket campaign and is a necessary step to gain approval from the league’s governors, which will take place on June 21st, also in New York.
