New Capital Volpatti glad to be back in Winnipeg

WINNIPEG — He’s back and he’s hoping for an early impression.
Winnipeg hockey fans have already seen plenty of Aaron Volpatti, the Washington Capitals’ new forward, picked up from the waiver wire from the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday.
The Caps meet the Jets at the MTS Centre today at 2 p.m. (CBC, TSN1290).
Volpatti, 27, played 83 games for the Manitoba Moose in their closing days, including 53 games plus 12 more in the playoffs in the final AHL season here.
He had 11 points in 53 regular-season games, plsu 74 penalty minutes.
Signed out of Brown University after the 2009-10 college hockey season was over, the Vancouver Canucks brought Volpatti on board.
He was injured when the Jets visited Vancouver last season and had been used sparingly this season when the Canucks decided more playing time with their AHL affiliate in Chicago was in order.
The Caps stepped in with a claim.
"I wouldn’t say things weren’t going well," Volpatti said after a Friday solo workout at the MTS Centre. He came straight here to meet his new team and amusingly enough Friday, he was wearing a Moose practice jersey, since the Caps hadn’t arrived yet. "I thought I was playing my role and I think they thought that, too but it was a matter of playing more, more icetime.
"That was their thought and I was a little surprised at the beginning but they wanted me to play more and in that sense, I agreed.
"So I had to clear waivers and now I have a new opportunity ahead of me and I hope it’s a good one."
The physical winger said he was thrilled to be back at the MTS Centre.
"I had a blast here," Volpatti said. "The Moose was a great organization as I’m sure the Jets are. The city was awesome. We had a lot of fun here and it’s good to be back."
