Pearn returns to coach Jets after 16 years

The Winnipeg Jets have added Perry Pearn to their staff as an assistant coach.
It's full circle for the 16-year NHL assistant coach. His first job in the league was on Terry Simpson's staff as an assistant for the Winnipeg Jets in 1995-96.
Since then, Pearn has worked for the Ottawa Senators, New York Rangers and Montreal Canadiens, who surprisingly fired him early last season.
"When I saw what happened in Winnipeg last year and sitting where I was sitting, it was certainly one of the cities where if there was an opportunity, I was going to be interested in going back," Pearn said Thursday.
Pearn has seen the new version of the Jets enough to know what he's getting into.
He was on the Montreal bench for last October's historic return of the NHL to Winnipeg and he scouted several games here later in the season on behalf of the Habs.
He recalled last season's opener vividly.
"I was very, very proud to know that I was standing on the bench with the Montreal Canadiens, but being one of the very few people in the building who had been involved with the Jets when they left," Pearn said. "I think we all left with a lot of pride (in 1996)."
The Jets also announced this afternoon that the rest of their coaching staff has agreed to contract extensions of two years. Assistants Charlie Huddy, Pascal Vincent, Wade Flaherty, Tony Borgford and St. John's assistant coach Mark Morrison all started out in the new organization with one-year deals.
