A new two-year deal for Paul Postma is only the start of the next chapter for the 24-year-old defenceman, Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff suggested Friday.
Postma agreed to a raise to $650,000 and then $775,000 in the second year late Thursday.
"Like all the RFAs, lots of conversations have happened over the course of the many, many days and weeks leading up to this time," Cheveldayoff said. "They all come together differently for different reasons. There are different pressure points throughout the whole negotiation process that come into play that are really all behind-the-scenes stuff. It all fell into place (Thursday) night.
"I think he’s shown that he’s very young player and there’s a lot of room for growth in his game. He’s earned the opportunity through his play over the course of the years at the (AHL) level to get the opportunity at the (NHL) level. Now, really, the ball’s in his court."
Postma played 27 AHL games in last season’s first half, scoring 18 points for St. John’s. In 34 games for the Jets once the NHL season began, he had four goals and nine points.
The Jets announced the signing of two more goalies on Friday.
Eddie Pasquale, the No. 1 man in St. John’s last season, and Michael Hutchinson, who was a backup in Providence, were signed to one-year, two-way deals.
