Scheifele invited to Canada’s National Junior Team Selection Camp
Mark Scheifele is one step closer to getting another shot at World Junior gold.
The 19-year-old Scheifele, drafted seventh overall by the Winnipeg Jets in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, was one of 37 players invited to Canada’s National Junior Team Selection Camp, which runs Dec. 11-13 in Calgary.
No other Jet draft picks or Manitobans were invited, although Swift Current Broncos’ forward Adam Lowry and Brandon Wheat Kings defenceman Ryan Pulock no doubt warranted consideration.
Scheifele could be one of six returning players to a squad that captured a bronze medal at last year’s IIHF World Junior Championships in Alberta.
The other five returnees are Dougie Hamilton, Jonathan Huberdeau, Boone Jenner, Ryan Strome and Scott Harrington. A seventh, Ryan Murray, is not available due to injury.
Scheifele is off to a scorching start to the 2012-13 season with his Barrie Colts, having already picked up 44 points (21G, 23A) in just 27 games.
In total, 31 of the players named to the selection camp are either 2011 or 2012 NHL draft picks, including 13 first-rounders and eight second-round picks.
The 2013 World Junior Championship will be held in Ufa, Russia and runs from Dec. 26-Jan. 5.
