Jets' Slater named an assistant captain for Team USA
Winnipeg Jets centre Jim Slater has been named an assistant captain for Team USA at the upcoming IIHF World Hockey Championships in Finland and Sweden.
Hockey USA announced the selections Thursday, naming defenceman Jack Johnson of the Columbus Blue Jackets the team captain, with Slater and Nate Thompson of the Tampa Bay Lightning named assistant captains.
Team USA opens its tournament with a game on Friday vs. France and plays Team Canada on Saturday. Team Canada, which includes Andrew Ladd and Evander Kane from the Jets, plays Slovakia on Friday.
