U.S. goaltender shows Canadian pride

New Jets goaltender Al Montoya is showing off some Canadian pride with his new helmet art, which may come as a surprise to some -- he's American.

"Can't beat the maple leaf. Being American, I still allowed it," Montoya told the Free Press at MTS Centre Thursday.

The red "Jets-styled" maple leaf is front and centre on the mask, designed and created by artist Ray Bishop, but Montoya's helmet also features more subtle tributes to his Cuban and American background.

He's been trying out the new design since September, but this is the first time Jets fans have been able to get a look at him on the ice.

Montoya, who signed with the Jets in July after the free agency departure of Chris Mason, can't wait to hear thoughts from fans on the new look.

"I'm really excited about it and hope the fans like it."
