Zherdev signs with Russian club

Talented but underachieving Russian winger Nikolai Zherdev has opted to showcase his skills at home.
Several media outlets are reporting that the 26-year-old forward has signed with the Atlant Mytishchi of the Kontinental Hockey League.
Zherdev, drafted fourth overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2003, has 115 goals in 421 NHL games with Columbus, the New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers and had said he had interest in playing in the NHL with the Winnipeg Jets. However, the Jets would never officially confirm any interest, calling the reports "rumours."
Zherdev’s signing with Atlant Mytishchi marks the second ‘name’ addition by the Moscow-based club after they had inked Alex Kovalev on the weekend.
In other news, The Everett Herald is reporting that Everett Silvertips director of player development Scott Scoville — one of the WHL team’s original hirings — has left the club to take a scouting position with the Jets.
Scoville was hired as the Slivertips’ head scout in 2002 and was promoted to director of player development in 2005.
"It’s pretty exciting for him," Silvertips GM Doug Soetaert, a former Jets’ goalie, told The Herald.
"He’s been with us nine years and he’s done a very good job. I enjoyed working with him and putting these teams together. As a head scout in this league you’ve got two ways to go, either get a general manager’s job on this league or a scouting job in the NHL. This came along and he’s excited about it. It’s a step up and definitely in the right direction for his career."
Scoville will join the Jets in September.
