Not what Winnipeggers envisioned for the debut of the NHL's new era here. Three times during the game, Jets goalie Ondrej Pavelec was left to face in-alone Montreal shooters and they scored on all three, not a good omen.
Pavelec was scored on with some big-league shots -- Mike Cammalleri, Tomas Plekanec, Yannick Weber, Travis Moen and Max Pacioretty -- and the simple truth is, the Jets had nobody shooting the puck with such accuracy on Sunday. That spells game over.
A lame interference call on Winnipeg's Dustin Byfuglien early in the third period led to Montreal's third goal, the power-play marker by Weber. Even though there were 15 minutes left, it was too big a hole for the Jets and it ruined the momentum they had gathered by creeping to down 2-1.
After he scored the opening goal of the game at 3:05 on a laser shot, Montreal's Mike Cammalleri didn't make it to the first intermission. After coming on for a faceoff with about four minutes left in the period, he ran into some traffic on the way to the bench and seconds later, possibly after being cut by a skate, was in serious distress on the bench. The game was stopped quickly and Cammalleri was taken off in a rush. The Habs had little in the way of news on his injury, nor that to fellow defenceman Jaroslav Spacek, who was also out early.
