THE BIG PICTURE

The importance of this 'W' -- given the recent tailspin and the crowded infirmary -- can't be overstated. It's only January and, yes, there's a ton of hockey left to be played. But the playoff picture can fade just as quickly as it comes into view and this result helps keep the Jets in the fight while ending a three-game skid.

LITTLE PICTURE

A gem of a road game was backstopped by Chris Mason, but this was the prototypical road win in which everyone in Jets colours played a role in shutting down one of the NHL's hottest clubs. Get this: even without dominant D-men Dustin Byfuglien and Zach Bogosian this was the first time this season the Senators had been blanked.

GAME BREAKER

The Jets lead 1-0 in the second period when this goal-starved club puts together a picturesque passing play capped by Tobias Enstrom blasting home his second of the year for a critical marker.

FREE PRESS 3 STARS

1. Chris Mason, G, Wpg. -- This was the definition of a 'team' shutout, but Mason was steady when called upon to make the key saves. Kicked out 25 shots for his second shutout of the season and 23rd of his career.

2. Jim Slater, C, Wpg. -- Scored, blocked shots and won some critical face-offs while helping shut down the Sens' top unit centred by Jason Spezza.

3. Ron Hainsey, D, Wpg. -- We debated Hainsey and Enstrom here, but opted for the veteran American. Led all Jets in ice time with just under 21 minutes and didn't make a bad decision or read all night.

UP NEXT

The Jets exited Ottawa immediately after Monday's game for today's date with the Devils in New Jersey, 6 p.m.; TSN Jets/TSN Sports Radio.
