Headed south fast, the Jets remained at 78 points and eight points off the Eastern Conference playoff line and didn't show much determination to get closer on Wednesday night. Winnipeg has lost five of its last six. The Jets were defeated four out of four times by the conference-leading Rangers this season, the only conference rival they failed to beat all season.
Little picture
A 2-0 lead via goals within 56 seconds by Spencer Machacek and Bryan Little early in the second certainly perked up the fans, who gave Machacek's fourth line a standing ovation. But Michael Del Zotto's shorthanded goal and Ryan Callahan's easy power-play goal wiped that out before the period ended. In the third, Brian Boyle got an easy route to the net from the corner to put the Rangers ahead, and Derek Stepan scored on a power-play thanks to an immensely marginal, possibly erroneous, call. Game over.
Game-breaker
Del Zotto's short-handed marker atr 7:44 of the first was just way to easy a play to stop and, according to Jets coach Claude Noel, opened the door for the first-place Rangers, who don't need a lot of help these days. Jets were zero for five on their own power play, with one goal against, and just three for five on the penalty kill.
