Hockey Night much more than a game
Hockey Night in Winnipeg is much more than just a hockey game. It's more like an experience, one that begins the second you walk into the upper or lower bowls of the MTS Centre prior to the opening face-off.
If you're there early enough, you can essentially watch vignettes on Winnipeg's largest television of hall of fame players or what's involved when the ice is put in after a non-hockey event.
Once the game starts, there's a never-ending stream of music, profiles of Jets players, promotions for various sponsors and fan-friendly things like the "smooch cam."
At the controls of it all high up above the ice surface in the press box is Kyle Balharry, director of event production at True North. He gives us a behind-the-scenes look at the methods behind the madness in this week's Jetcetera.
It doesn't always go according to plan. For example, his camera crew does its best to find couples for the smooch cam but occasionally they'll zero in on a brother and sister or cousins.
"That's okay, they can give each other a peck on the cheek. It's not called the 'make-out cam,'" he said.
