Recovered from injury, Redmond re-signs with Jets

THE road to recovery for defenceman Zach Redmond will travel through Winnipeg for another season.

The Winnipeg Jets announced Saturday that they have re-signed the 24-year-old restricted free agent to a one-year, two-way contract.

Redmond had one goal and three assists in just eight games with the Jets in 2012-13, his first year in the NHL.

Abrupt end

But his season came to an abrupt end on Feb. 21 when his right femoral artery and vein were cut by a teammate's skate during a team practice at PNC Arena in Raleigh, N.C.

Redmond was rushed to hospital where doctors stitched the wound closed during a three-hour surgery, but not before the defenceman had lost dangerous amounts of blood.

A Jets team doctor would later describe Redmond's recovery as "miraculous" when the player returned to the ice barely six weeks later.

Redmond did not play again for the Jets last season, but he did play in two games in St. John's with the American Hockey League's IceCaps to end the season.

The Jets said in a statement on Saturday that Redmond's deal will pay him $715,000 at the NHL level in 2013-14.

A seventh-round draft pick of the Atlanta Thrashers in 2008, Redmond has 16 goals, 34 assists and 71 penalty minutes in 113 career AHL games.
