WINNIPEG JETS
Record: 24 – 21 – 3
Winnipeg Free Press - PRINT EDITION
Spotlighted: 87 Sidney Crosby
HIS NUMBERS:
Goals: 2; Assists: 0; Points: 2
HIS ICE TIME:
22 shifts, 21 minutes 38 seconds.
First Period
Crosby hit the ice flying, scoring on his second shift of the game. The goal, at 4:58 of the period, was a low shot that got through Jets goalie Ondrej Pavelec. At 14:58, Crosby broke down the left side with Pascal Dupuis on a two-on-one. He held the puck, avoided the stick-check attempt by Winnipeg defender Mark Stuart and popped a backhander through Pavelec's pads. The fans at the MTS Centre left Crosby alone -- booing teammate Evgeni Malkin once or twice -- until he had two goals, then started in on him late in the period.
Second Period
On the first shift, Crosby's turnover in the neutral zone allowed the Jets to counter and Evander Kane found the open side to put the Jets on the board. Later in the period, Crosby showed some of his feisty side, not liking Dustin Byfuglien's cross-check in the corner; he took a stick swipe at the big Jets defenceman. In the final minute, Crosby's back pass off the boards resulted in another turnover and counter by the Jets and only a heroic rebound save by Tomas Vokoun kept the game at 3-2 Jets.
Third Period
Eight shifts in the period and some more flashes of danger. But things were just a fraction off from clicking, either tipped pucks by defenders or an untimely hop.
WHAT WE LIKED:
Crosby ended the game with just three shots on goal, all from the first period. The first period was a classic example of making a lot out of not that much. Easy to see from above, but the Jets rarely had him out of their sights.
WHAT WE DIDN'T LIKE:
Crosby had a couple of passes in the middle period that were risky and intercepted by the Jets for countering scoring chances, even one goal. But a little risk is part of the game.
SYNOPSIS:
Unlikely that Crosby would call that one of his better games, but he still had two goals and kept the fans in their chairs in the first period. MTS Centre fans also went comparatively light on No. 87, likely a sign of high respect.
