St. John's coach a big fan of junior call-up Scheifele

McCambridge appreciates prospect's many skills

COUNT St. John's IceCaps head coach Keith McCambridge among the many who have grown to appreciate Mark Scheifele's skill set.

The Winnipeg Jets' first-round draft pick made his AHL debut for the IceCaps last week, picking up an assist in two playoff games against the Syracuse Crunch. And McCambridge, who first saw Scheifele last September while coaching the Jets' top prospects at the Young Stars tournament in Penticton, B.C., continues to be impressed.

"Winnipeg didn't push (the IceCaps) playing Mark one way or another," said McCambridge. "It was always what's best for St. John's. For me, it was looking at balance. When I look at Scheifele, he helped form this line we were thinking about if we were to get him with (Marco) Rosa and Carl Klingberg on the wings.

"It's given us an even more-balanced attack. He's played in high-pressure games and he's obviously played a lot of hockey this year. He's done really well. We just wanted him to go out and play his game and adjust to the pro level.

"His first game was good," added McCambridge. "His second game was REALLY good. He puts the work in every day, he's upbeat and he looks like he's enjoying himself right now."
