WINNIPEG JETS
Record: 24 – 21 – 3
Winnipeg Free Press - PRINT EDITION
Spotlighted: 35 Al Montoya
HIS NUMBERS:
Minutes: 40; shots: 12; goals against: 2; save percentage: .833
First period
Faced just six shots and surrendered two goals, but could hardly be faulted on either. The first came on a tip by Brayden Schenn, the second a power-play goal by Kimmo Timonen in which there were two bodies in front. Also stopped Harry Zolnerczyk on a breakaway with the score 1-0 to keep the game from getting away from the Jets early.
Second period
The Flyers managed just six shots again and while they controlled the puck for stretches down low, their chances on Montoya were limited. But he was run into by Jakub Voracek and hacked after jumping on a puck by Zac Rinaldo. As the third period started, the Jets PR staff announced that Montoya -- who didn't leave the game or seem to be labouring -- was out with a lower-body injury.
Third period
Ondrej Pavelec steps in for Montoya, who remained on the bench, and gives up a goal just 4:17 into the period. Faced 11 shots and was steady, but will take the loss for giving up the game-winning marker.
WHAT WE LIKED: He handles the puck better than Pavelec and doesn't look uncomfortable leaving the crease to go get it. His rebound control, as was the case in the shutout over Ottawa on Saturday, was solid.
WHAT WE DIDN'T LIKE: Without knowing the extent of his injury it's difficult to dig too deep, but there were some durability concerns about Montoya coming into his first season as a Jet, and that could still be an issue going forward.
SYNOPSIS: The Jets will have their fingers crossed Montoya's injury is just minor and won't keep him out long. With Pavelec's numbers sub-par, they need the vet to push him. If not, next up in the system is Eddie Pasquale, the No. 1 puckstopper in St. John's.
