Machacek makes splash

IT'S his second crack to make an impression and right-winger Spencer Machacek said he was ready.

The 23-year-old fourth-year pro, the leading scorer to date for the AHL's St. John's IceCaps, played on a line with Jim Slater and Tanner Glass on Sunday.

Machacek's recall was prompted by another injury to right-winger Eric Fehr.

"I'm very excited," Machacek said after Sunday's game-day skate. "The team's in a big push here. It's an exciting time of the season. I'm just coming here trying to help them get some wins."

Machacek had 17 goals and 48 points in 58 games for St. John's. The last time he was brought to the NHL's Jets, it was just after the all-star break. He played 5:10 in Philadelphia and 7:47 in Montreal, making Sunday his first NHL appearance at the MTS Centre.

"I just want to be an energy guy, a two-way player, maybe chip in and play well in my defensive zone," Machacek said. "I take pride in shutting guys down. I take pride in that."

He said that he'd have no trouble adjusting to the different standings circumstance in Winnipeg. The IceCaps are comfortably in first spot in their AHL division.

"Just coming up is intense in itself," he said. "Being on the bubble of making the playoffs right now, every point is crucial. It's going to seem like a playoff game anyway. I expect a lot of games like that. I'm an intense guy as my career's gone on so I want to bring my intensity and energy."

Welcome back, Zach

JETS defenceman Zach Bogosian received a five-minute charging and game misconduct penalty midway through the second period for his hit on Andreas Nodl. Bogosian saw Nodl with his head down trying to carry the puck out of the Canes' zone and levelled him. The play was called by one of the linesmen... Nik Antropov left the game after scoring his 13th of the season and third in as many contests with a lower-body injury... Machacek and Patrick Dwyer got into a second-period scrap that was one of the most lopsided of the season with Machacek scoring a unanimous decision.
