The Manitoba Junior Hockey League crowned its champion as the Winnipeg Blues surged past the Dauphin Kings to claim the final series.
In front of 1,400 thrilled fans at MTS Iceplex tonight, the Blues seized their championship dreams, beating the Kings 5-1 to claim the final series in five games. Blues forward Kamerin Nault scored two goals and added an assist in the contest, while Taeron Lewis had three assists and Clay Tait had a goal and an assist.
The winning goal was a quirky one, a shorthanded marker that came late in the first period when Kings' netminder Jordan Piccolino skated far out of his net to chase a loose puck. Blues' forward Warren Callis beat him to it, sailed around the goalie and fired into the open net.
The Kings finally drew blood in the second period, with a Brent Wold goal off a slick pass from Dylan Butler. But that late first-period goal would stand as the game-winner, as the Kings were only able to muster 16 shots on Blues goalie Byron Spriggs, who has been outstanding in these playoffs.
