The Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame unveiled its 2013 inductees on Monday morning, naming six players, seven builders and one official to the list of honoured names.
The inducted players include La Salle, Man., defenceman Mike Ford, who was a key cog on the Avco Cup-winning Winnipeg Jets teams. Retired NHLer and Brandon Wheat Kings alum Bill Mikkelsen, Blue Bomber and Maple Leaf Gerry James, Canadian national team veteran Vaughn Karpan, Chicago Blackhawk Bill Watson and late journeyman pro Ed Hoekstra are also being inducted.
Among the builders is Wayne Fleming, the longtime NHL and Canadian team coach who died last month after a long battle with cancer. He was inducted early in a special bedside ceremony in Calgary.
Coach Wayne Chernecki will also be inducted posthumously. Other inductees include league builder Don MacKenzie, St. James Canucks founder Tom Miller, longtime hockey leader Bruce Southern, minor and junior hockey coach Al Tresoor and referee Ian Heather.
Official Bob Thomson, who refereed 3,000 games in southern Manitoba, and the 2003 Île-des-Chênes North Stars who won the Canadian senior hockey championship Allan Cup will also be inducted.
The formal induction banquet will take place on Oct. 5. Tickets are $120 per person, with tables of 10 available for $1,100. A charitable tax receipt is included. Tickets can be ordered at mbhockeyhalloffame.ca.
