Manitoban women's under-18 team hopes for another shot at gold

WINNIPEG — They’ll be a younger team but they’d like to fix one small matter from last year’s national women’s Under-18 hockey championship.

"We went in there wanting to make history for Manitoba and we knew we could be the team to do that," said Team Manitoba forward Nicole Carswell, 17, about 2012’s 2-1 gold-medal loss to Team Ontario-Blue. "When we lost, it was a pretty upsetting. But as rookies, we just had to get the mentality that next year, we’ll hope to have a better result."

Team Manitoba has five returning players, including Carswell, today’s roster unveiling showed.

The team is off to the nationals for another crack at that gold November 6-10 in Calgary.

Included on this year's squad are goalies Devan Johnson (Stonewall Collegiate) and Kristen Campbell (Shaftsbury Titans); defencemen Cecline Carone (Steinbach Regional), Mellisa Hunt (Westman Wildcats), Kate Friesen (Pembina Valley Hawks), Madison Patrick (St. Mary’s Academy), Kati Tabin (Balmoral Hall), Kayla Mee (Shaftsbury) and Tess Bracken (Balmoral Hall); and forwards Lauryn Keen (Pembina Valley), Carswell (Winnipeg Avros), Christian Higham (St. Mary’s), Stephanie Grossi (Shaftsbury), Sheridan Oswald (Central Plains Capitals), Courtlyn Oswald (Central Plains), Danielle Krzyszcyk (St. Mary’s), Alanna Sharman (Avros), Meike Meilleur (St. Mary’s), Saige Patrick (St. Mary’s) and Randi Marcon (St. Mary’s).

The team will be coached by Winnipeg Hawks male bantam coach Neil Chow.

Hockey Manitoba also announced its male Under-16 team today, to compete in the Western Canada U-16 Challenge Cup in Calgary, Oct. 31-Nov. 3.

Head coach Doug Sinclair of the Winnipeg Thrashers will have on Team Manitoba goalies Brett Evans (Parkland Rangers) and Ryan Kubic (Thrashers); defencemen Connor Bowey (Winnipeg Monarchs), Brady Pouteau (Pembina Valley Hawks), Dean Stewart (Central Plains Capitals), Liam Schioler (Shattuck St. Mary’s), Darby Gula (Eastman Selects) and Eric Lavoie (Winnipeg Sharks); and forwards Dylan Thiessen (Winnipeg Wild), Kevin Jackisch (Monarchs), Connor Barley (Thrashers), Vince Loschiavo (Thrashers), Tanner Kaspick (Brandon Wheat Kings), Linden McCorrister (Interlake Lightning), Jermaine Loewen (Lightning), Nathan Halvorsen (Wild), Ty Lewis (Wheat Kings), Dawson Martin (Wild), Brett Howden (Eastman Selects) and Nolan Patrick (Thrashers).
