Three Bisons honoured as top hockey players by Canada West

  • Print

University of Manitoba Bisons men's hockey team members Blair Macaulay, Jeremy Schappert and Dane Crowley were recognized as the 2011-12 Canada West conference men’s hockey all-star teams and post-season honours were announced Wednesday.

Macaulay, a third-year forward who led the conference and Canadian Interuniversity Sport in goal scoring with 23, was named the MVP of the conference and is the Sullivan Trophy nominee for the CIS Player of the Year. Schappert was selected as the outstanding defenceman and winner of the Mervyn "red" Dutton Trophy.

Both Macaulay, 23, and Schappert, 23, were named 2011-12 Canada West first team all-stars while Crowley, 25, was selected as a defenceman to the second all-star team.

Macaulay is just the second Bisons player to be named Canada West Hockey MVP since the award began in 1978-79. Paul Deniset was chosen in 2004-05.

Schappert, the conference's outstanding freshman last season, is also just the second Bisons player to win the outstanding defenceman award. Chris Saint-Cyr took that honour in 1985-86.
