Three of Manitoba’s finest young hockey players will wear red and white on the ice this week, after making the cut for Team Canada’s women’s U18 team.
Team Canada unveiled its 22-player roster Sunday as it prepares to battle the rival U.S. in a best-of-three series that kicks off Aug. 21 in Calgary. The final picks were made after 42 players converged in Calgary for a selection camp, which wrapped up on Sunday.
Among the players chosen is Balmoral Hall Blazers forward Ryleigh Houston, a 15-year-old phenom who scored 27 goals and 26 assists in just 27 games for the Blazers last season and was named the Junior Women’s Hockey League offensive player of the year.
Joining her in the forward corps is Christian Higham, a 16-year-old St. Mary’s Academy Flames scorer. Meanwhile, Hartney resident Melissa Hunt will patrol the blueline. Hunt, 17, is a force for the Manitoba Female Midget Hockey League’s Westman Wildcats. Houston and Hunt both attended the IIHF Women’s High Performance Camp in Vierumäki, Finland earlier this year.
