Battalion end Petes' playoff push
BRAMPTON, Ont. - In the end, the Peterborough Petes fell just short.
Mike Amadio’s goal at 1:37 of the third period proved to be the winner as the Brampton Battalion put an end to the Petes’ valiant playoff push with a 5-2 win on Sunday afternoon in Ontario Hockey League action.
Peterborough’s loss, combined with the Kingston Frontenacs’ 5-1 win over the Ottawa 67’s, assured that the Frontenacs and Mississauga Steelheads secured the last two playoff spots in the Eastern Conference.
Francis Menard, Barclay Goodrow, Matt MacLeod and Brendan Childerley also scored for the Battalion (34-25-9), who won their fourth game in a row.
Michael Clarke and Brett Findlay scored for the Petes (26-35-7), who came into the contest winners of their last four games.
Jake Smith made 24 saves for the win as Andrew D'Agostini stopped 23-of-27 shots in defeat.
Clarke opened the scoring late in the opening period thanks to a nice redirect off a centering feed from Derek Mathers.
Brampton tied the game at 5:33 of the second when Menard snuck a puck past D’Agostini on the power play.
MacLeod made it 2-1 for the home side late in the second as he fired a quick shot past D’Agostini from the low slot.
After Amadio’s goal early in the third period, Childerley made it 4-1 with a short-handed goal before Findlay brought Peterborough to within two on the power play just 38 seconds later.
Goodrow rounded out the scoring in the dying seconds of regulation into an empty net.
Peterborough went 1 for 2 on the power play while Brampton capitalized on its only opportunity with the man advantage.
Brampton, which finished fourth in the East, will face the Sudbury Wolves in an Eastern Conference quarter-final series.
Peterborough, which was as much as 16 points out of the eighth and final playoff spot, missed out by a single point.
