Blades prevail in shootout over Hitmen to record 17th straight win
CALGARY - Nathan Burns scored the lone goal of the shootout as the Saskatoon Blades edged the Calgary Hitmen 3-2 to record their 17th straight WHL victory Wednesday.
Brett Stovin scored twice in regulation for the Blades (40-21-3), while linemates Nick Zajac and Lukas Sutter each had two assists
Spencer Humphries and Brady Brassart scored for the Hitmen (40-18-5), who lost their second straight game.
Andrey Makarov stopped 41 shots for Saskatoon, while Chris Driedger made 21 saves for Calgary.
The Hitmen went 1-for-6 with the man advantage, while the Blades failed to score on five power-play chances.
Stovin scored at 11:40 of the second period to put the Blades up 1-0 before Humphries converted a great feed from Victor Rask during a Hitmen power play.
Stovin scored just 16 seconds into the final frame to make it 2-1 Saskatoon before Brassart tied the game at 13:11 to force extra time.
Following a scoreless overtime period, the shootout went to five rounds until Burns finally snapped a shot past Driedger to keep Saskatoon’s winning streak alive.
